Hi, my name is Cindy and I blog at Living for the Sunshine. I have a confession to make to you guys today: I love changing diapers.
Weird, right? Well actually, it’s a pretty common feeling among those of us who use cloth diapers.
Most people who hear that I use cloth diapers assume I am some kind of environmental-crazed planeteer who is making the ultimate sacrifice for the earth by suffering through loads of dirty laundry.
I am here to tell you this absolutely not true! After four years of cloth diapering, I am here to tell you you will actually LOVE cloth diapering.
Love changing dirty diapers? You’re probably thinking I’m insane, but it is 100% true. Most parents who cloth diaper absolutely love diapering their kids. How many disposable-using parents can say the same?
I’m going to explain the reasons why you should not only choose to cloth diaper your babes, but why you will LOVE cloth diapering!
The adorableness factor of cloth diapers cannot be denied. The big butt babies get from wearing a cloth diaper even has a name, a fluff butt. There are a million different prints out there that are just so stinking cute! You can even find diapers that match your interests, or even favorite movies and television shows like Harry Potter.
Sure, there are some disposable diapers with some prints, but they are nowhere near as sweet as cloth diaper prints (plus they are super expensive), and you still don’t get a cute fluff butt!
#2-Save Some Dolla Bills
Ok, saving money was not on my mind when I first decided to use cloth diapers (this was before I actually had a kid and was rolling in dough). However, after having a baby and living on maternity leave pay, the money we are saving absolutely thrills me. So much so that when I hang my cloth diaper loads to dry, I mentally calculate how much money I’m saving with each cloth diaper I hang. I can’t tell you how satisfying it is!
You do have to fork out some cash up front, but that investment will be worth it after a few months of not running to the store to buy diapers. Not to mention, if you have a second, third, or fourth kiddo, the diapering cost is totally covered (unless of course you get addicted–see reason #1 and want to blow all your spare cash so you can #buyallthediapers).
I love the smell of diapers. Well, not the poopy ones! But nice clean diapers fresh from the laundry have a clean, unmistakably baby scent. Even wet diapers don’t get stinky. Whenever we use the odd disposable diaper, all it smells like is old urine (or worse!).
Once the day comes and your toddler is FINALLY potty-trained, you can sell your old cloth diapers to recoup some of the cost. It’s pretty easy to sell your used diapers. There are tons of B/S/T groups for diapers on Facebook.
Would you believe you can actually sell some diapers for a profit? That’s right. Some limited edition diapers resell at a higher (sometimes much higher) price point than their original cost. Betcha can’t say that about your old disposable diapers!
Although this is definitely not the only reason I love cloth diapering, it does make me feel proud that the very small amount of effort I’m making to use cloth diapers has a big environmental impact. By doing two extra loads of laundry a week (and when you’re a mom, who’s counting?) that I can divert 2500-3000 diapers from the landfill per year.
Another major concern I had when I was pregnant with my first babe was exposing her to unnecessary chemicals. I had heard horror stories about babies getting chemical burns from their diapers. Well, guess what disposables are made of?
It’s easy to find cloth diapers made of natural materials like cotton, bamboo and hemp. There are even organic cloth diapers if you don’t want anything unnatural touching your baby’s tush.
#7-The Dreaded Diaper Rash
Do you have nightmares about diaper rash that just won’t clear up? Cloth diapers are made from breathable materials which reduces, if not eliminates, most diaper rashes (my daughter never had a rash, except mild ones when she was teething!).
#8-Potty Training Like a Pro
Did you know that using cloth diapers actually help with potty training? The theory is that when your toddler pees in a cloth diaper, he/she actually feels the wetness, unlike disposables. This creates awareness that contributes to potty-training success. Coming from the mom of a toddler who was potty-trained before her second birthday, this was a surprising bonus for us.
When you start a cloth diaper journey, there is tons of support from other cloth diapering mamas. It’s easy to form a bond when you love cloth diapers so much. There are so many Facebook groups to support cloth diaper users and fan pages (yes, this is a thing!) for specific diaper brands. Even brands and retail stores are super helpful and lovely if you need to reach out to them.
#10-Support Small/Local Businesses
Finally, supporting small and local businesses is a huge bonus when using cloth diapers. Most cloth diaper brands started with WAHM’s who wanted better for their babies.
Many retail stores that sell cloth diapers are often small, local boutiques, versus large box stores (although some box stores are starting to carry them).
As you can see, there are a ton of reasons to love cloth diapers. I can tell you with confidence, if you choose cloth diapers, you will absolutely LOVE diapering your kiddos! If you have any questions about cloth diapering, I would love to chat with you and give you a hand starting your own cloth diaper journey!!
