I’m Haley and this is my birth story for my son Easton Cain.
When I was 36 weeks pregnant I had passed out from POTS and landed on my stomach. (Learn About Pots) I went to the hospital to get me and Easton checked out. By the time we got to the hospital, I had already started having contractions. As usual, they hooked me up to all the monitors and called the doctor to come to check on me. For almost a whole day they would say that they were gonna send me home and then my contractions would pick up so they would change their mind. The monitors they had did not like me though. They picked up around 1 out of every 8 contractions I was having, so of course, the nurses thought I was crazy. They decided to move me to a labor and delivery floor but it was for expecting moms who were in the hospital, no babies were to be born on that floor.
Once I got settled on that floor they gave me a shot of morphine because I was hurting so badly from the contractions.
The nurses still thought I was crazy at this point but one nurse FINALLY felt a contraction that the monitor didn’t pick up.
She decided to check me and then ran out of the room to call the doctor. The doctor checked me and said if I wanted an epidural then we needed to get me down on the correct floor ASAP. Within 15 minutes I was on the correct floor and getting the epidural done. As you can imagine, I was feeling NO pain. I slept until a nurse woke me up to check me and to her surprise, it was baby time!
I pushed for around an hour then she went to get the doctor. Nobody had realized Easton was sunny side up. meaning even though he was head down, he was facing upwards and unable to come out without help. The doctor explained that they could use a vacuum and risk breaking his collarbone or they could use forceps. The choice was easy for me as I picked forceps. However, in the midst of all of the pushing, I had started to black out. I would start pushing and then I would wake up to the nurse trying to get me to talk or open my eyes. However, I was unconscious when my son was actually born. I didn’t even know he had come out of me until my mom held my head up to see him.
God had blessed me with a healthy baby boy.
However, the forceps did a lot of damage and I tore the worst you can tear giving birth. I wasn’t given any antibiotics and a week after I had given birth I developed a very serious infection. It took almost 3 months of antibiotics and hospital visits before the infection was gone. I had surgery to fix the tearing 5 months later and sadly the same thing happened, I had got another infection and all of my stitches came out. I had put my body through a 3-hour surgery for absolutely nothing. Now we’re here 9 months after giving birth and they say there’s nothing that they can do now.
As mothers, we put our bodies through a lot to have our children. Our love is like no other for that reason.
